Install OrcSDR on your Tab5

This page writes the free, open-source OrcSDR firmware to your own M5Stack Tab5 over USB, straight from the browser. You run the install; nothing is installed for you.

OrcSDR v0.3.0-beta.1 · complete image · ESP32-P4 · 3.8 MB

This browser can't do Web Serial. Use desktop Chrome or Edge, or install with M5Burner. Web Serial needs a secure page. Open this over https:// (or localhost).
This resets your Tab5's saved settings. The complete image is written from address 0, which includes a blank settings (NVS) area, the same as an M5Burner install. Write down your Wi-Fi details, location and rotation first. To keep settings, use the Windows settings-safe installer from the release page instead.
Beta, and this browser route hasn't been tested on a Tab5 yet. If it fails, M5Burner and the release installer are the known-good paths. Please report what happened.

Step by step

  1. Write down your settings. Wi-Fi names and passwords, location, screen rotation. This install resets them.
  2. Use desktop Chrome or Edge. Windows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS. Firefox, Safari and phone browsers don't have Web Serial.
  3. Connect the Tab5 to the computer with a USB-C data cable and switch it on. It shows up as the ESP32-P4's own USB Serial/JTAG port (USB ID 303A:1001).
  4. Click Connect & install, pick that port in the browser's list, and confirm the install.
  5. Wait. Don't unplug it while it writes 3.8 MB and verifies. The Tab5 restarts afterwards.
  6. Unplug the PC cable and run from the Tab5's battery or a USB-C supply. Open Settings → Firmware & Updates; it should report ESP-Hosted 3.0.6 on both processors. Re-enter your Wi-Fi.

Troubleshooting

No serial port in the list
Try another cable; many USB-C cables are charge-only. Plug straight into the computer, not a hub. Close anything else that has the port open (serial monitors, M5Burner, Arduino IDE).
Drivers
The Tab5 uses the ESP32-P4's built-in USB Serial/JTAG, not a separate USB-to-UART chip, so there's no CP210x/CH34x driver to install. Current Windows, macOS and Linux include the needed USB serial support.
Linux: permission denied
Your user may need access to serial devices (often the dialout or uucp group). Log out and back in after adding it.
It connects but won't start flashing
Unplug, power-cycle the Tab5, and try again. The OrcSDR docs don't describe a manual boot-mode sequence; if it still fails, use M5Burner or the release installer.
Black screen after flashing
Check the file. The complete image is exactly 3,812,384 bytes; an app-only file is smaller and leaves a blank screen if written at 0x0 (this happened once with beta7).
Resets during live radio
The docs tie many brownouts to the PC cable staying plugged in. Unplug it after installing.
